Samosa Wontons

I bought wonton wrappers at the grocery store for no reason at all the other day. I thought maybe I would make ravioli because I saw Giada do it on her show and it looked so easy and of course, delicious. But then, as soon as I had them at home I didn’t really want to make ravioli with them and every time I opened the fridge, they were staring at me.

**Side note: we went to Vegas over July 4th weekend and ate at Giada’s restaurant which is VERY vegetarian friendly, SUPER pricey, and just slightly better than average. I was kind of mad that the server told us that our $28 pasta bowls were not meant to be dinner portions and we should order a separate entree (WHAT?)

Anyways, back to my wontons. Yesterday I was finally struck that I can use these to make samosa’s which I love to eat but usually don’t want to go through the trouble of making the dough. So thats what I did! Pretty easy to do, tasty, and good for freezing so I can pull them out when we have people over.


I start by cutting up the veggies for the filling. I used carrots, potatoes, onions and green peas.


I cook the filling, adding in turmeric and red chili powder. It takes about 15 minutes to cook.


I get the wonton wrappers ready by taking a spoonful of filling in each one and creating little packets.


I tried baking some and frying some to see how they would turn out. Honestly frying wins (big surprise!). The baked ones were fine, but weren’t as crispy and a little too chewy. So much for being healthy.


The final product- the first photo is the fried version and the second are the baked ones! Perfect with some green or tamarind chutney (or both!)



Prep time: 25 minutes    Cook time: 5 minutes

Serves: 20 samosas


  • 1 medium-sized carrot, finely chopped
  • 1/2 cup frozen peas, defrosted
  • 1 medium sized potato, finely chopped
  • 1/4 of a large red onion, finely chopped
  • 1 teaspoon cumin seeds
  • 1 teaspoon red chili powder
  • 1 teaspoon turmeric
  • 1.5 teaspoons lemon juice
  • Salt to taste
  • Packet of wonton wrappers
  • Water to seal of wrappers
  • Oil to fry


  1. Boil potato in microwave for 5 minutes before chopping
  2. In a medium sized frying pan, heat up some oil on medium heat to make samosa filling
  3. Add cumin seeds and let sizzle for 1-2 minutes
  4. Add onions and cook until translucent (2-3 minutes)
  5. Add the chopped potato and cook for 5-7 minutes until slightly brown
  6. Add carrot, peas, turmeric, red chili powder and cook for 5-7 minutes more.
  7. Add salt to taste
  8. One minute before taking off heat, add the lemon juice
  9. Let filling cool slightly
  10. Take about one small spoonful of the mixture and place in center of wonton wrapper
  11. Dip one finger (or brush) in water and seal off the wonton wrapper edges by tracing edge with finger
  12. Fold the wonton wrappers into packets (or whatever shape you prefer)
  13. If baking, spray with oil generously and bake at 425 for 20-25 minutes
  14. If frying, heat up oil in frying pan and fry wontons for about 30-45 seconds until they puff up a little and are golden brown

    You wouldn’t believe me if I would say I can have it for 3 meals on day! Would you ?

    Fried one is something looks awesome, but I wouldn’t mind trying them.

      Thanks for your comment! A wonton is a small square-sized piece of dough that you can buy at the store (or make yourself) and are generally used in Chinese food for dumplings or other reasons. You can really use them in alot of ways though – so you should try to get your hands on a packet if you can. Definitely try them if you can! I will try to share more recipes – it has gotten tougher of late but I am hoping to share something at least once a week 🙂 You should share some of the recipes you are cooking up too!!

        I do when I can. I cook daily food but nothing extraordinary. Since last week I have lot of slots on my menu so I will be cooking more and yes share as often as I can. Thanks your explanation, I got it.
